The squirrel running across the trees barely had any time to gather his thoughts before he heard his name being called.
-Eiken! Eiken, are you there?
Eiken stopped, and looked down through the branches. He recognized this voice. It was kind of an annoying voice to him. It sounded way too young for it’s age. His theory was proven right as he recognized the figure too. It was Pigg, the small, brown, cowardly hedgehog. If there was one rodent that still wanted to hang out with Eiken, it was this kid. Eiken had a theory that for some reason, the hedgehog looked up to him. He decided not to let Pigg wait, and hopped down from the tree. His entrance got a little embarrassing, as he did like he always did when trying to jump down from trees, and hit the ground with face first.
-Eiken! You okay? the hedgehog shouted irritatingly loudly.
-Yeah, Eiken’s muffled voice answered. He got up as quickly as he could. The hedgehog, unlike Eiken, had always been unable to stand on two legs, making Eiken always seem taller.
-Why do you always do that? Pigg asked in his squeaky voice.
-Beats me, Eiken answered.
-Well, you better get all that dirt away from your face, or you’re gonna get into even more trouble than you’re already in!
-I’m in trouble?
-You bet! You didn’t show up to the morning sun ceremony! Roten is furious!
It was like the whole picture before Eiken crumbled. He had been so busy with Lynatt that he had forgotten the ceremony! That stupid wolf had cost him both a visit with his best friend AND the dignity he had left with his kind! And now his annoying, little fan was rubbing it all in his face!
-Also, why didn’t you show up to the visit with the birds yesterday?
Eiken cracked his knuckles.
-No special reason! he said louder then he planned. Just based on this morning, he was sure this day was not going to be a good one.
-Well, you better hurry, or…
-Yeah, yeah! I’ll go to Roten! Eiken interrupted. The faster he could be alone again, the better.
-Awesome! I’ll go with you!
These were the last words Eiken wanted to hear right now. Not even bothering to answer, he simply nodded stiffly.
The two wandered the long way back to their neighbourhood. Eiken didn’t bother to look at Pigg, but as the small thing talked, he kind of remembered why he’d never run away from him. Even though he was annoying, there was a certain charm to him.
-Oh, remember when YOU were at school?
The hedgehog interrupted his own conversation.
-Yeah, of course, Eiken answered mildly. His mood had improved immensely during their walk. Maybe it was the younger one’s constant energy and optimism. Or maybe Eiken just felt a little better being around someone that looked up to him like that. He really did remember when he was in school. It was not even long ago. Pigg was still in school, because of the age gap between him and Eiken. After school, an animal had to become of age before getting to work in their environment. He was still underage, so he could just relax. This was perhaps one of the reasons he had gotten much lazier the past time.
-Man, I’m looking forward to getting out of that! Pigg continued, oblivious to Eiken’s daydreaming.
-I’d much rather hang out with you!
Eiken quickly turned his head at these words, feeling surprised and flattered at such sudden words of admiration.
-Really? he said in as much of an adult tone in his voice as he could manage. When the kid was already impressed, he could at least go all the way.
-Yeah!
Pigg was looking at him with shining eyes. He was actually kind of cute. This plump, small animal that always seemed enthusiastic when around Eiken. He had no idea why the hedgehog had chosen him as his idol, but he had always kind of liked the attention. Still, for some reason it had always been hard to see Pigg as a friend. Eiken didn’t know why, but there was something about him that felt…wrong.
-Well, it seems we’re almost home, Eiken said, beginning to feel scared. What would their strict chief punish him with now that he had neglected a ceremony?
Chapter 6: Pigg
A short one. Its only purpose is to introduce a new character. Is it strong, is it weak? I don't know. You'll decide! Not much else to say.
